Following the difficult two years and more that we’ve all faced, it finally feels like we’re edging towards a somewhat normal level of activity across all areas of our lives. This is not to ignore the challenges that still lie ahead – habits have been formed by audiences over the pandemic period which will need attention in order to make a full recovery. Since the last newsletter we’ve had the announcement of the pilot scheme for a Basic Income for Artists – this innovative scheme will have far reaching consequences for the future of the arts in Ireland. It is entirely novel to witness countries such as Australia, Canada and the Netherlands look to Ireland as a pioneer in terms of support for the arts. For so many years, we cast our minds enviously towards their models of funding and support. Let’s hope that the results of this new initiative will have positive impact for generations of artists and audiences to come. Many of us will have read about the shortlists for the Irish Times Theatre Awards. Somehow, against the Covid backdrop, 180 shows were available to be seen and the judging panel was vocal in expressing their admiration for the resourcefulness and imaginative approach of the sector. This is mirrored across all art forms and it is constantly gratifying to consider how brilliantly the whole arts landscape responded to the pandemic. This newsletter includes details of a call out for a youth voice expert, a role which will be critical in helping us shape our policies for children and young people. During a recent inspiring visit to Stanhope St Primary School, we encountered several members of the Creative Schools council – it was refreshing and energizing to hear these young people speak of their ambitions for their remarkable school. We were in no doubt that we were meeting leaders of the future. Those students will be among the hundreds of participants in Creative Schools week. This year’s theme is Creativity Lives Here! and I hope that you’ll join us this week to consider where creativity lives for you.
