The ICO welcomes the extraordinary Australian conductor, composer and violist Brett Dean for three emotive concerts in Dublin, Limerick and Cork (in association with Cork Orchestra Society) from 11-13 September respectively. One of the most internationally performed composers of his generation; Dean draws from literary, political, environmental or visual stimuli. Mozart adds his voice to Bach’s music, paying tribute to the master of fugue while Dean’s Short Stories, five evocative abstract miniatures, serve as interludes in between. An ethereal programme features Mozart’s rarely heard Masonic Funeral Music alongside Hindemith’s achingly beautiful Trauermusik. Mahler's atmospheric Adagio from his towering Tenth Symphony crosses an unremitting arc of emotion.
Later in the month, the ICO returns to Semple Stadium, Thurles performing at one of Ireland’s popular rock festivals Tipp Classical on Friday and Saturday 20 and 21 September. Veteran rock bands including The Stunning, Horslips, The Frank and Walters, Picturehouse, Sultans of Ping, Something Happens take centre-stage alongside the Irish Chamber Orchestra for this iconic festival.
From BBC Young Musician of the Future to royal weddings, the ICO works with the amazing young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason for the first time (23-24 October). This 19-year-old has taken the world by storm and is this year’s best-selling British debut artist – across ALL genres with his album Inspiration. He performs Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto, an instant hit and firm favourite due to its melodic content and virtuosic writing. Conducted by Gabor Kali, one of Europe’s finest young conductors, don’t miss Sheku Kanneh-Mason in his Irish concert debut with the Irish Chamber Orchestra at University Concert Hall Limerick on Wednesday 23 October and St. Peter’s Church of Ireland, Drogheda on Thursday 24 October in association with Drogheda Classical Music.
Jörg Widmann and the Irish Chamber Orchestra embark on a U.S. Tour (16-20 of November) visiting prestigious venues in Illinois, New York and Washington DC. They perform Mendelssohn’s 8th Symphony, a tiny gem, which splendidly captures his teenage spirit. The ICO and Stuttgarter Kammerorchester jointly commissioned the re-writing of Widmann’s Attempt at a Fugue. U.S. Soprano Claron McFadden is once more at the heart of this work as her incredible vocal acrobatics demonstrate the power of the human voice. Mozart re-arranged his C Fugue for strings, with an introductory Adagio reminiscent of a French overture. Widmann‘s highly original String Sextet, 180 Beats Per Minute, was inspired by music from his college days. He demonstrates his own versatility performing Weber’s dramatic Clarinet Quintet. This tour has been generous supported by Culture Ireland.
December’s ADVENT AND ARIAS, features the radiant cantata Dies Natalis, Finzi's finest work. Tenor Robin Tritschler aptly reflects the joy and wonder of a newborn child’s innocent perspective on the world. Tritschler sings festive carols alongside an aria from Handel’s beautiful Chandos Anthems, The Lord Preserveth All Them That Love Him. Katherine Hunka directs the ICO in Albinoni's Adagio, a breathtakingly beautiful piece of stately baroque brilliance alongside Elgar’s much-loved Serenade. Handel’s Allegro is from one of a series of twelve dashing and elegant concerti grossi where he explores, kaleidoscopically, the shifting relationships among the string instruments. Katherine Hunka and the ICO present these two festive concerts with Tritschler at Monkstown Church, Dublin on Thursday 12 December and at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick on Friday 13 December.
Join us for another terrific season of music! The Irish Chamber Orchestra is resident at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Further information/images available from charlotte.eglington@ul.ie
