In this session we will explore what artistic risk looks like and why it is important. We will also consider the steps that need to be taken in order for artists, commissioners and audiences to create and experience art that is challenging, provocative and sometimes uncomfortable.

Socially engaged practice can be art that is collaborative, participatory, sometimes activist in nature, and involves people to create and empower the work. Increasingly, independent artists use this dynamic and contemporary form of practice within their own art making, while simultaneously, there is growing interest from local communities to affect social change through art and to take part in art-making within their public realms. George Higgs (music), Marilyn Lennon (visual arts) and Ríonach Ní Néill share their inspirations and motivations for creating socially engaged art works. Chaired by Annette Moloney, Independent Curator and Public Art Advisor to the Arts Council.
